Discovery of the Week: Antti Pouta
The sincerity of the Finnish folk scene: deep poetry, warm acoustic sound, and melancholic stories that speak to everyone
Antti Pouta, best known as the keyboardist for the band Pariisin Kevät, launched his solo career in 2016 with the release of the single “Valkea valo.” Pouta wanted to share his own worldview, which inspired him to write his debut solo album, Yhteys, released in 2017.

In a 2017 interview with Soundi magazine, Antti described these songs as diaries of sorts, containing many significant moments and emotions. He noted that it felt rewarding to finish the album and, at the same time, bring a specific chapter of his life to a close.

Looking back, the musician emphasized that he was particularly proud of how the lyrics and the album as a whole managed to carry a spark of hope and light, despite all the underlying drama.

Music critics warmly received the beginning of Pouta's solo career, and following a series of solo performances during a mini-tour of Finland, Antti announced that work on his sophomore album was already underway.

The next full-length release was titled Välivuodet and came out in 2021. The album differed significantly from its predecessor in mood and touched upon much darker themes.

In an interview with Rumba magazine, Pouta characterized the album as the grand final battle of a person searching for themselves, filled with brutal loneliness and fluctuating mental health. He explained that through this record, he attempted to mentally revisit the moments when he would flee from his life into the night heat toward flashing light signals. The musician admitted that his self-centered actions at the time had harmed his loved ones and left him with deep, festering wounds, while the faint voice of conscience tried to preserve the sanity of a man lost in time.

Antti Pouta's music is a blend of indie and pop elements, seasoned with pleasant electronic textures and a rhythmic guitar sound. His melancholic and at times chilling music definitely deserves to be heard.
