Discovery of the Week: Behm
The phenomenon of the Finnish pop scene and the magic of heartfelt ballads
Popularity came to Behm in 2019 following the release of the single “Hei rakas” (“Hello My Love”), which remained the number one hit in Finland for ten consecutive weeks. However, her music career began in late 2016 when Behm was chosen to participate in a songwriting camp for young musicians organized by Veikkaus and Apulanta. Before that, Behm had taken piano lessons for several years and later bought a guitar, but she had no formal musical education and was essentially self-taught.

According to Apulanta's drummer, when Behm arrived at the camp, she did not view herself as a performer at all. She merely mentioned that she had been writing lyrics in private and composing melodies for them. Behm still dislikes calling herself a singer, readily admitting that this identity feels completely foreign to her.

At the songwriting camp, Behm met Ella-Noora Kouhia, with whom she later formed a duo named Behm & Ellis. The duo performed at the 2017 UMK pre-show, where representatives from the music production company M-Eazy Music noticed Behm, leading to her signing her first contract.

One of the first demos Behm wrote during that period was a recording titled “Solmussa” (“In a Knot”). Subsequently, a single of the same name, featuring Behm on the chorus, was released by the artist Pikku G in late 2017. The song “Solmussa” became Behm's first major breakthrough, reaching the top of the Finnish national chart and staying there for twelve weeks.

In an interview with Teosto, Behm admitted that she had never taken singing lessons, which she believed was definitely noticeable because her technical skills were poor. She added that she was completely fine with that and had accepted it.

In 2018, Behm signed with Warner Music Finland and released the famous single “Hei rakas.” The song reached number one on the official Finnish chart and stayed there for nine weeks. Building on her success, Behm released her second single, titled “Tivolit” (“Carnivals”), in March 2020.

Speaking to Teosto, Behm reflected that she must have been doing something right, though she did not know exactly what it was. She noted that she had no industry contacts or connections initially, being just an unknown person from the city of Lahti before she started writing songs that eventually found their path. She expressed appreciation that everything came down to the music itself, adding that she did not consider herself a hitmaker but had simply happened to create songs that resonated with many people.

These events drew significant attention to Behm, who had already become memorable to listeners for her pleasant voice, her love for beautiful stage performances, and her retro style. However, Behm carefully guarded her personal life from the press, and for a long time, even her age was a subject of debate and speculation. In most cases, Behm would either speak extensively in interviews or try to stay completely silent, believing that she had shared too much about herself and that her words had been misinterpreted. She later even promised to stop interacting with the press altogether, though she ultimately did not go through with it.

The third single “Frida,” released in July 2020, was the last one before the release of the debut album Draaman kaari viehättää (“The Drama Arch Charms”), which came out in early autumn. All ten songs from it immediately entered the top 14 on Spotify Finland.

In response to questions about her work, Behm admitted that she simply made the music she wanted to listen to herself. She confirmed that this sincerity might explain her popularity, as the songs touched listeners because they were written from pure motives. Behm also shared that she did not follow Spotify statistics or think about how to maximize plays, focusing instead on self-expression.

In an interview with Teosto, Behm explained that she had always listened to traditional Finnish songs, while also listening to a lot of rap. She noted that she liked indie folk but also loved Rammstein, adding that in her view, the best songs were created in the 1960s. She concluded that her own music might be a fusion of all these influences.

In its first days, Draaman kaari viehättää was streamed more than 2.2 million times, making it the most-streamed new debut album in the history of Finnish music. Draaman kaari viehättää topped the official Finnish chart in its first week and spent a total of twenty weeks at number one, eventually achieving quadruple-platinum status by November 2021.

This album features the song “Apokalyptinen häpeä” (“Apocalyptic Shame”), which Behm dedicated to her own personal struggles, specifically her continuous shame over being too talkative.

In an interview with Yle, Behm confessed that if she said something nice to someone, she would later wonder why on earth she had said it, even though they would most likely not even remember it later. However, in her head, it all took on insane proportions. She added that shame hid behind many emotions and that while no one could get rid of it, nor did they need to, one simply learned to live with it. She noted that she used to be unable to do so, which had been absolutely terrible.
The YleX Läpimurto jury selected Behm as the most promising musician of 2020. During the same period, Behm won in six categories at the Emma Gaala: Artist of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year for “Hei rakas,” Pop Release of the Year, and Artist of the Year by public vote, as well as Best-Selling Album of the Year.

In February 2022, Behm released the first single from her second album, titled “Ethän tarkoittanut sitä” (“You Didn't Mean It, Did You?”), and then, nearly a year later, presented the second song, “Sata vuotta” (“A Hundred Years”).

Behm released her second album, Merkittävät erot (“Significant Differences”), on September 22, 2023. She had been working on it for three years under immense pressure.

In an interview with MTV Uutiset, Behm mentioned that she had even been learning music production, which led her to spend many hours on YouTube studying the technical aspects of playing keyboards. She added that learning something new was highly beneficial.

In Merkittävät erot, Behm raises themes of death, failure, social pressure on women, and relationship crises.

Speaking to MTV Uutiset, Behm explained that she could not write songs about basic pleasant things, such as everything going well or her drinking beer. She noted that there were global themes, which was why she wanted to address them, adding that melancholy was the dominant part of her music.

Currently, the performer is focused on promoting Merkittävät erot.
