Discovery of the Week: Negatiiviset Nuoret
Loud protest and honest punk from Lahti that shook the Finnish scene with their raw sound
The music of Negatiiviset Nuoret has been heavily influenced by genres such as punk rock and rap. The band's lineup consists of vocalist Olli Antonio, vocalist and guitarist Eetu Knuutila, guitarist Jonne Haapala, bassist Aleksi Määttänen, and drummer Juha Aalto. The lyrics of the band, whose name translates to “Negative Youth,” are filled with provocative honesty, and their entire creative output is a combination of catchy, rhythmic melodies and pleasant performance styles. The songs of Negatiiviset Nuoret create a natural balance between drama and the rebellious spirit inherent to the punk genre.

Initially, the band recorded under the Rähinä Records label, where they released their self-titled debut album Negatiiviset Nuoret, but in 2021, they transitioned to Kreme Records—a label founded by their vocalist, Olli Antonio.

Speaking to the Rumba publication in 2021, Olli Antonio explained that they had always planned to establish their own label at some point, noting that it was, in a way, every rapper's dream. He mentioned that in the spring, he and a couple of friends had finally begun brainstorming this project and pushing it forward. He added that it had felt like the right time to fully take publishing into their own hands, and when the opportunity arose and suitable partners were found, everything came together successfully.

Following the release of their first album, the band needed some time to create new music. In the spring of 2022, Negatiiviset Nuoret released their second album, Negatiiviset Nuoret II, which features a stronger influence of old-school rock and roll. The songs on this album touch upon real-life struggles, themes of human relationships, mental health, and issues related to substance abuse.
